Bingo experience

Yesterday, I had my first bingo experience. It’s one thing I’ve always wanted to have a go at. However, as I’m young, people just laughed at me. SERIOUSLY?

I managed to find a friend that would come with me to share this experience. And an experience, it was!

A few weeks ago, I found a Groupon deal for Gala bingo: 10 games, a main meal and drinks for two. I was actually looking forward to it.

When we arrived, we were greeted by a young lady who signed us up and gave us our vouchers. As we strolled through the doors into the large complex, there were slot machines scattered around, an entrance into the bingo hall, a dead, basic, greasy cafe and a standard bar area.

Our games were about to start. Rushing to the hall, we stood there like lemons, not really knowing what to do next. There were multiple rows of tables and chairs filled with, let’s say, more mature adults than ourselves, focusing intently. We were definitely the youngest in the room.

As we approached some empty seat, the main event started:
£10 for one line
£15 for two lines
£100 for a full house

Concentrating immensely, we carefully listened to the numbers and casually crossed off any of them in the first box. First mistake.

This was pretty easy. Heart beating faster with each number crossed off. First game over with no wins. The room was silent through out, with only the stern, mono-toned voice of the guy calling out the numbers. There were only a few mutters in between games. First half over, repeating the same exercise, still with no wins.

By this time, we were starving as neither of us had had breakfast. Queuing up for food, we read the limited menu, looking at the poor quality, minimal amount of food under those heaters. The server was hilarious: he clearly didn’t care and didn’t want to be there.

‘Do you have an scampi?’

‘I don’t know!’ Surely, it was his job to know.

‘What desserts do you have?’

‘I don’t know!’ after the chef had told him they only had sticky toffee pudding for pudding.

While waiting for some fish to cook, I went to the bar to get some drinks. We could get any drink, which was pretty good considering the price we paid.

After finally receiving our food, we consumed it in the bingo hall.

Second half. Main event with prizes of:
£20 for one line
£30 for two lines
£300 for a full house
Big money!

We repeated the same structure for the first game until my friend exclaimed ‘That lady is crossing off all the numbers on the sheet, are we meant to do this?’ I disrupted the women next to us and asked her.
She replied with a funny look ‘Yes!’
How were we suppose to know? What a waste of 7 games!

Laughing to ourselves, we continued with the rest of the games, quickly scanning our eyes for the number. Wow! This was harder! I was definitely starting the get a headache: listening and concentrating too much.

What a great first experience! Bucket list = ticked off.
