Routines, organisation and busyness

Part way through my first full week of teaching in year 5 at a new school and getting use to routines and the class. Trying to get the class into a routine can be difficult but I’m finding as long as I am consistent, in control and know what I am doing the class is going smoothly.

Today I had my first maths morning rotation… What chaos! 4 group with 4 activities and rotating. It was mental. 16 activities to plan, get resources and the children all learning in one. I thought my class coped so well. They were all on board. Raring to go.

As a teacher, you have to be organised, what’s happening next, what’s happening the next day, who responds well to what, knowing how to extend and explain things clearly. I’m still learning but trying to reflect and improve everyday.

Setting up a classroom is organisation heaven. You think you have sorted everything else and then something comes up – TA assessment sheets, Olympic reading sheets, plans, displays. I always have a constant list but hopeful set up thing will be done so just focusing on learning.

I have been at school every day from 7.30am till 6.30pm but that’s the life of a teacher. It’s just busy, busy, busy.

The children are loving my reward systems. Table points are so motivating and they just love the competition. As soon as I say ‘Let see who’s getting a table point’ they all stop and listen. Rewards just keep children going and they just love praise. I know that I need to give more and more praise. It just motivates them to want to learn.

I am so enjoying getting to know my children, how they work, what they are good at, what they like doing.
